The City of Hemet has a long history of settlement, company prosperity, and aeronautics. Originally, Hemet was once called home by the Native American Soboba people and the Cahuilla tribe prior to Spanish colonization. They were then moved by Jesuit missionaries to the Native American reservation near San Jacinto. A cattle ranch was then made to occupy this new land by Mission San Luis Rey, at this time Hemet was called Rancho San Jacinto after the settler's name. During World War II, Hemet hosted the Ryan School of Aeronautics, where approximately 6000 pilots for the Air Force were trained between 1940 and 1944, now the site of Ryan School for Aeronautics is the Hemet-Ryan Airport.
